The Moon in our natal chart represents our emotional/instinctual responses, our history, our family origin, our habits- the way we eat and sleep, as well as where we find comfort. When comparing birth charts with another person, we use the astrological branch known as synastry, and we must always consider the entire chart. Still, a moon sign comparison can indicate how we emotionally respond to, relate to, and understand one another. This is not to say incompatible Moon signs are a deal breaker; I do not believe they are, especially if other harmonious aspects are present in the chart, such as a Sun/Moon conjunction, trine, and sextile.
Moon Conjunct Moon
A Moon/Moon Conjunction, or even two Moon signs in the same sign without forming a conjunction by degree, shows comfort, a major emotional understanding. This does not suggest a romantic nature, though the connection can certainly be, but it is an “I feel at home with this person” aspect. They understand me. The two may have similar upbringings or similar ways of processing emotions. They get one another on an emotional level. I often think of Leanne Rimes and Eddie Cibrian, both of whom have Moon in Capricorn. She describes their life as “comfortable, calm and normal.” That is the energy of having the same Moon signs, especially the comfort. And as a Capricorn moon, that is important: this is not a Moon sign that is drawn toward emotional chaos and upheaval.
“The vibration can produce a telepathic exchange of thoughts, making you sensitive to each other’s moods and sympathetic to each other’s feelings” – Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs.
“The two individuals are apt to have similar attitudes and values in home and domestic affairs, diet and family matters”-Astrology of Human Relationships.
Moon opposite Moon
Moon/Moon opposition is when two moon signs are opposing one another:
Aries/Libra
Taurus/Scorpio
Gemini/Sagittarius
Cancer/Capricorn
Leo/Aquarius
Virgo/Pisces
I appreciate Moon oppositions because they can create strong attraction, excitement, and lively back-and-forth energy. Although this aspect is not as difficult as the square, it can still bring friction. In my view, it asks both people to consider each other’s perspective and meet halfway. The key is to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and try to understand where they are coming from. Opposing planets can teach us a great deal.
I often think of Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber when reflecting on Moon oppositions in synastry. They had other factors that made this connection unable to work out long-term, but I believe this aspect is part of the reason they kept coming back to one another. Justin’s Moon is in Libra, and Selena’s Moon is in Aries. It is an aspect that creates excitement; however, the entire chart must be considered, and, sadly, there were other factors that made this long-term union impossible.
“Remember the law of Polarity can work beneficially because each possesses what the other lacks, and the magnetic pull between two opposed planets can cause your natures to balance smoothly in a pleasant exchange of attitudes toward day-to-day problems, especially in disagreements with others outside your relationship.”-Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs
“If the natives are to cooperate effectively, they must seek to understand each other’s mood, feelings, and past family and emotional conditioning” – The Astrology of Human Relationships.
Moon Square Moon
This is by far the hardest aspect to have between Moon signs; I am not in any way implying it is a deal breaker, but it does require major adjustments. I was on a call recently with a client who was annoyed that her spouse sleeps late and is not tidy, and I remarked that their Moon signs are square to one another; this suggests their sleep and eating habits are not aligned. It also suggests you cannot relate to or understand one another emotionally. It requires a great deal of explaining. With the conjunction, your emotions are infused, and you completely get one another; with the opposition, you can see the other’s point of view, but you need to meet one another halfway; with the square, you cannot see nor relate to one another; it causes a lot of friction.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have Moon square Moon; Brad’s Moon is in Capricorn, and Angelina’s Moon is in Aries. I want to put a disclaimer here that Brad Pitt was ALLEGEDLY abusive to Angelina at least once during their marriage, and I do not have favorable opinions on him in any regard. He is someone with favor in the media and often paints her as the problem with that being said he once described her as having no “self-regulating mechanism” and in court documents she referred to him as an “emotionally closed-off partner whose behavior was fueled by alcohol” I would like to say emotionally reactive abuse is real but let’s take out the story of who they are and what we know about them in media reports. These are two moon signs that will struggle to relate to one another, as the Aries Moon does not hold back everything we feel; it is on the surface; we are indeed emotionally reactive. Capricorn Moon is withholding, repressed, and controlled. We can see how the square aspect struggles to relate and understand one another.
“Usually, this vibration does not create any really serious stress or tension. It will more likely manifest itself in petty bickering or trifling irritations and annoyances which may occur frequently but leave no lasting scars to destroy your relationship”- Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs.
“Natives with this comparative aspect are apt to have difficulty understanding each other’s feelings and emotional responses. This sometimes is a result of differences in family and cultural background”- The Astrology of Human Relationships
Moon Trine/Sextile Moon
A trine or sextile between Moon signs suggests ease, emotional understanding, and natural compatibility, though it may not bring the same growth or excitement as more challenging aspects. These aspects usually occur between signs in the same or compatible elements. Still, the entire chart must be considered. Harmonious Moon aspects can make a relationship feel supportive and emotionally intuitive, but they do not guarantee a lasting connection. Being together often feels easy, with both people sensing, “I understand you, and I see where you are coming from.”
“Your tastes are similar, likewise your likes and dislikes, and you’ll usually be in agreement in both major and the minor ones”- Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs.
“This comparative combination indicates good emotional rapport and harmony between the natives. It is favorable for those who are members of the same household.” The Astrology of Human Relationships.
