Pluto in Synastry: Who holds the power and who is more obsessed?
Anyone who has ever found themselves in the midst of a plutonic relationship or connection will eventually go down the Google rabbit hole, asking who holds the power in this connection. Which person is more obsessed; is it the planet person or Pluto? You will find many varying opinions on social media and on various blog posts, and I strongly feel that the answer is not so black and white. We must consider several factors as well as the nature of the personal planet involved, along with the native’s personal relationship to Pluto and 8th house themes in their own birth chart. For people who do not possess a heavy natal Pluto, meaning planets in Scorpio, the 8th house, or personal planets making hard aspects to Pluto when they meet this energy in another, the whisper is less of a “come hither” and more of a “run for your life”. People that are not familiar with the depths of Pluto are often uncomfortable with the darker terrain of this planet, so when they meet this energy in another, the first instinct is to run. And my advice is to let them. Please know they were not built for the intensity and transformation that Pluto demands. Also, a connection with someone that is not Plutonic will not be satisfying to the Pluto person because the planet person will often lack the intensity and transformational quality the Pluto person seeks.
Pluto in synastry governs all or nothing; Pluto rules natural disasters, annihilation, complete transformation, and transmutation. Pluto is associated with the myth of Hades and Persephone and the underworld. Highly plutonic connections often involve strong elements of control, power, things that are kept secret, connections that thrive in the shadows, and people who activate one another’s darker desires. These are not superficial connections; these connections demand total honesty and transparency. They ask you to lay your soul bare and to strip one another of all false pretenses. They always have an obsessive quality; they feel fated, and the people involved are often magnetized with one another. Pluto connections that start out light will eventually find their way to the taboo, the hidden, and the unlocking of Pandora’s box. These connections thrive in private, in secret, and in the locked-up corners of your mind that few get to see or experience. Pluto operates unconsciously, so you may not understand why you are drawn to another person when your Pluto meets their personal planet or vice versa, but the purpose of this connection is often catalytic. You often meet one another when you are being asked to become more authentic, more honest, and a truer version of yourself. These connections serve as catalysts to get in touch with the deeper dimensions of yourself and examine your shadow sides, feel the feelings you usually suppress, think the thoughts you ordinary keep compartmentalized, grant yourself permission to push life to the extreme, embrace the taboo, the desirable, dip your toe in the dark, the murky, the compulsive and intoxicating and dare to come out the other side changed, metamorphosized and a truer version of yourself.
These connections are not light work; they exist in the realm of shadow work. The intensity is unmatched, the desire is unfiltered, the pull is all-consuming and inescapable. But to answer who holds power and who is more obsessed, we need to look at the planets involved.
Sun/Pluto Hard Aspects Only: Conjunction, Square, and Opposition

Of all the Pluto–personal planet aspects, this one may be the clearest case where Pluto is likely the more obsessed. The Sun illuminates whatever it touches, so in this dynamic, the Sun person lights up the Pluto person’s obsessive nature. Pluto becomes fascinated by the Sun because Pluto belongs to the shadows. Pluto does not simply live in darkness; he rules it as Lord of the Underworld. By contrast, the Sun appears bright, captivating, and almost impossible for Pluto not to want to possess. The Sun person holds power because their presence activates Pluto’s shadow side: jealousy, untamed desire, and obsessive impulses. They shine a light on Pluto’s darker tendencies. If the Sun person is comfortable with shadow work—perhaps because their natal Sun is in Scorpio, placed in the 8th house, or strongly connected to Pluto—they may also become captivated by the Pluto person’s attention and intensity. If the Sun person is at a turning point in their psychological development, they may unconsciously recognize the Pluto person as a catalyst for their growth. In short, the Sun person activates the Pluto person’s shadow, which can make Pluto more obsessed, while the Sun person is drawn to the darker, more transformative elements of the connections they may not experience in everyday life. As for who holds more power I think it goes both ways. If the Sun withdraws its light, Pluto can suffer an internal collapse because Pluto’s nature is all or nothing. If Pluto withdraws its focus, the Sun may feel empty without Pluto’s hypnotic presence, which makes them feel special, desired, and deeply seen.
Moon/Pluto Hard Aspects Only: Conjunction, Square, and Opposition
With Pluto Moon hard aspects, the draw is emotional; Pluto enjoys making the Moon person feel stripped, vulnerable, and emotionally seen. Here, I believe the Moon is the more obsessed because no one can make them feel as intensely as Pluto, and often the Moon person will leave this connection seeking that depth in others, which is essentially hard to find. The Moon person is totally emotionally exposed in this connection; they can share their deepest, darkest feelings and secrets, knowing that Pluto thrives in darkness. The Moon person experiences a judgment-free connection where they can lay their soul bare. They may also find they work out old emotional wounds or traumas with Pluto; Pluto has a lot to do with Alchemy and therapy, so when Pluto and the Moon meet, Pluto can act as a catalyst to the Moon’s deepest hurts and secrets. They are emotionally seen and accepted. The Pluto person is drawn to the Moon because the Moon person welcomes shared vulnerability, depth, and transformation. Pluto is drawn to deep analysis, and when these two planets come together, Pluto can dig deep, uncover, dissect, and unpack this person’s psychological makeup and emotional landscape. If the Moon person is more surface-level emotionally or someone who does not dig deep, the Pluto person will enjoy stripping them and making them confront their own truth and unpack their emotional shadows. I think the Pluto person holds more power here because they can bring the Moon person to emotional depths as well as highs and lows that the Moon person will unlikely experience anywhere else, and that is exactly the reason why the Moon person is more obsessed, and Pluto holds the power
Venus/Pluto Hard Aspects Only: Conjunction, Square, and Opposition
This is what I like to refer to as one of my vampire sex placements (along with Pluto/Mars). The Venus Pluto contacts make for an equally obsessive and all-consuming relationship. The extremes are wide here: love and hate, make up and break up; it’s hot, it’s intense and addictive like all Pluto contacts, and it guarantees you will never love again the same if this connection should end. Venus represents love and relating; however, Venus is a planet bathed in superficiality. It holds no depth or weight, and Pluto is the planet that plummets the depth. Pluto is drawn here to Venus’ beauty and lightness, and Venus is drawn to Pluto’s darkness and intensity; this makes a recipe for change and transformation. These relationships come with a heavy warning regarding possessiveness, control, and toxicity. The sexual attraction will be unmatched; the dial turned up to 1000. Pluto is happy it found a person that is attractive, tantalizing, and desirable. Pluto is eager to strip Venus of their false superficiality and take them on a trip to the underworld where the pleasantries are skipped, and authenticity and truth are demanded. Venus, on the other hand, is drawn to depths they likely never experienced. Pluto makes Venus feel seen, chosen, and valued. I think in this connection both people are equally obsessed and hold the power. This is a connection that is all-consuming, life-changing, and equally intense for both parties. These contacts make it so the Venus and Pluto person believe that the intensity is only to be found in one another. This is a hard tie to break, but if it breaks, the two simply don’t part; they explode, they destroy, and they hit a point of no return.
Mars/Pluto Hard Aspects Only: Conjunction, Square, and Opposition
While this is one of my least favorite Pluto personal planet aspects, it does suggest a vampire sex, all-consuming connection. It comes with a heavy warning. This is one of the aspects that is considered a domestic violence aspect in synastry. It does not always manifest that way, but it can manifest as an undercurrent of feeling like you are walking on eggshells or land mines. The Undercurrent is usually not pleasant, and while all Pluto contacts can result in power struggles, this one takes it to the next level. They may force one another to face issues with control, power, and rage. This is like two dynamite sticks going off. Pluto is drawn to the direct assertion of Mars, as Pluto tends to operate in the shadows and Mars is drawn to Pluto’s quite intensity; however, again, I want to stress these aspects require great care. Mars is drawn to Pluto because Mars is the planet that governs war and respects strength. Mars is also the planet we associate with sex, so it loves Pluto’s sexual transfixation, leaving them feeling desired. I believe Mars holds a bit more power in this dynamic only because Mars is impulsive and takes action without thinking things through. Where Pluto is methodical and slow-moving, Pluto is laser-focused, and when Mars blows up and moves on, Pluto can be left feeling betrayed, hostile, and angry. I think Pluto is the more obsessed one here because they unconsciously know Mars can pick up and go at any time. Also, Mars does not like being held or captured, so when Pluto transfixes on them, they are not enthralled easily like other planetary placements; they rebuke, refusing to be held back or controlled.
Ascendant/Pluto Hard Aspects Only: Conjunction, Square, and Opposition
When discussing Pluto in synastry, this aspect for some reason is oddly often left out: Pluto conjoining the ruler of the first house or a person’s Ascendant. This is a very potent aspect in synastry, as the Ascendant governs the person’s physical vehicle; it rules the body and having the Pluto of one person make a hard aspect to the Ascendant or ruling planet of the Ascendant can impact the Ascendant person quite viscerally. The Pluto person has a very profound impact on the Ascendant person. The Ascendant person may want to submit, give in, and yield to them without question. The Ascendant person likely feels a hypnotic and intoxicating draw to the Pluto person. The Pluto person can trigger desires and the shadow side of the Ascendant person, whereas the Pluto person’s shadow side to manipulate, control, or own the Ascendant person is activated. Pluto often develops a fascination with the Ascendant person wanting to merge with them and understand them, whereas the Ascendant person is drawn to Pluto because the Pluto person is bringing out parts of them, they may have buried. Pluto strips the Ascendant person of their mask, dropping the pleasantries and chats about the weather; it brings up themes of dominance, unbridled attraction, sexual taboos, and intensity. Pluto is addicted to the psychological control they have over the Ascendant person, and the Ascendant person is obsessed with the way the Pluto person makes them feel protected, desired, and alive. In this connection, I think both are equally enthralled; the Pluto person finds someone that acts out their darkest fantasies and compulsions, but the Ascendant person is at the mercy of the Pluto person’s attention.
